A Belgium supporter celebrating the team's hard-won World Cup victory over Algeria fell to his death after toppling off a statue in downtown Brussels, officials said Wednesday.

The 41-year-old climbed atop the monument as home crowds went wild after Belgium's 2-1 winning start in Group H. "He fell heavily after losing his balance while waving the Belgian flag," said Ine Van Wymeersch, a spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor's office. "It was an accident, he wasn't pushed," she told AFP.
