Five Rangers players banned after virus breach

Five players from Scottish Premiership champions Rangers were handed six-match bans by the Scottish Football Association on Tuesday for breaching coronavirus rules.

First-team trio Bongani Zungu, Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey and academy youngsters Brian Kinnear and Dapo Mebude were charged by the FA after an illegal house party.

The punishment comprises an immediate four-match ban plus a suspended two-match ban for each player.

It means Patterson, Zungu and Bassey will still be able to feature again for Steven Gerrard's side this season as they look to complete an unbeaten Premiership campaign and lift the Scottish Cup.

Rangers are set to finally get their hands on the Premiership trophy after a 10-year wait when they round off the campaign at home to Aberdeen on May 15.

It is not the first time this season that Rangers players have infringed the protocols.

Earlier in the campaign, Jordan Jones and George Edmundson were suspended by the club for attending a house party.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last month called on football to "make sure your house is in order".

She had previously criticised Celtic's mid-season training camp in Dubai, which resulted in 13 players having to self-isolate on their return to Glasgow due to one positive coronavirus case.
