I'm still the man for Rangers, says McCall

Rangers manager Stuart McCall says he wants to remain in charge of the Ibrox club despite seeing their dreams of returning to the top flight of Scottish football destroyed.

The fallen Glasgow giants lost 3-0 to Motherwell in the second leg of the Premiership play-off final at Fir Park on Sunday to go down 6-1 on aggregate.

To compound their misery there were ugly scenes following the final whistle when substitute Bilel Mohsni kicked and then punched Lee Erwin after being pushed by the Motherwell player following the Tunisian's refusal to shake his hand.

Police Scotland confirmed it is to investigate the incident, which sparked a mass brawl, prompting home fans to flood onto the pitch to goad the Rangers players and supporters.

Rangers had been hoping for a third successive promotion since their liquidation and enforced demotion to the bottom tier of Scottish football in 2012.

However, Hearts' runaway title win meant they had to settle for a place in the play-offs, in which they beat Queen of the South and Hibernian but could not get the better of a Motherwell side who finished second-bottom in the Premiership.

Now the Gers will spend another season in the second-tier Championship where they will need to fight it out with the likes of Hibs and relegated St Mirren in a new bid to win promotion.

McCall, who was only given a short-term contract when he replaced Kenny McDowall in February, now faces an uncertain future at Ibrox.

But the former Motherwell manager insists he is the right man to rebuild Rangers and restore them to their former glories.

"If you look at what the club will need next year they are probably what my three strongest points are - recruitment, getting the best out of players and improving them," McCall, who is due to meet new chairman Dave King for contract talks this week, said.

"It's a fantastic club to work for and there's still a lot of good players going to be here next season.

"There is work to be done and I would like to be here. I will have a meeting shortly and see where we go from there.

"I've enjoyed the last few months and I think we have done a decent job but over the two games they haven't been good enough.

"I'm obviously disappointed at what's happened but I'm proud that we managed to get there as it's been tough behind the scenes.

"There's obviously some things the club has to change. There is no scouting network whatsoever and I think getting a head of recruitment is essential.

"With the right recruitment and coaching then 12 months today Rangers can be back in the top flight, I've no doubt about that."

Motherwell's emphatic win maintains their 30-year stay in the top flight and manager Ian Baraclough, who replaced McCall in the Fir Park dugout in December, said he would savour the result.

"When you get a result like that you have to enjoy it," Englishman Baraclough said after second-half goals from Marvin Johnson, Lionel Ainsworth and a John Sutton penalty secured victory on the day.

"Hopefully now we can strengthen over the summer and get back to some normality when the new season comes around.

"It's been a tough season for us but we deserved it. You can't argue with the scoreline.

"We went to Ibrox and did some damage there and came back here and weathered the storm early on. We expected that and there was a lot of nerves but the boys showed a fantastic appetite to dig in and then go and play.

"There is a lot of work to be done in the summer. There will be players departing but we have to make sure we come back stronger so we are not in this position next year."
