Rangers progress to play-off semi-final

Rangers came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with Queen of the South on Sunday to scrape into the semi-finals of the Scottish Premiership play-offs with a 3-2 aggregate win.

Rangers missed a host of chances to add to their slender 2-1 first-leg advantage before Queens levelled the tie when Derek Lyle headed them into a 35th-minute lead at Ibrox.

Alexander Clark produced a wonder save to keep out Kenny Miller's header before captain Lee Wallace knocked home the equaliser on the hour mark.

Lyle then had a late effort cleared off the line in a nervy finish as the Glasgow giants held on for an aggregate win.

Rangers will have little rest before facing Hibernian, who finished second in the second-tier Championship, on Wednesday in the first of a two-leg play-off that leads to a final against Motherwell, who will finish second bottom of the Premiership.

Gers gaffer Stuart McCall, who left Motherwell earlier this season, thought the finish was more nervous than it should have been.

"If we had got the first goal it would have made it easier for ourselves, but we didn't," McCall said.

"I think over the piece we deserved to go through and we probably proved a lot of people wrong."

In contrast, a dejected Queens manager James Fowler couldn't hide his disappointment.

"I'm a bit disappointed as I thought we did enough to take the game into extra time. But I'm really proud of the players and their performance. I don't think there was much between the teams," he said.

Both sides made just one change apiece for the crucial match with Nicky Clark replacing Steven Smith for Rangers while Mark Millar came in for Stephen McKenna in the visitors' midfield.

Rangers looked to add to their slender advantage early on with Clark firing wide from close range after getting on the end of Wallace's cut-back.

Only the outstretched leg of Queens 'keeper Clark then stopped Nicky Law from opening the scoring in the 14th minute after some fancy footwork from Haris Vuckic created a chance in the box.

Queens defender Mark Durnan made a meal of a simple pass to a team-mate near the halfway line that allowed Vuckic to motor towards goal. The Slovenian picked out Clark with a pass but the ball got caught under the striker's studs, allowing Kevin Holt to make a sliding challenge that snubbed out the danger.

Vuckic was again in the thick of it as he weaved his way past a couple of defenders before cutting in to the box and drilling a low shot that Clark had to stretch to get a hand to.

Rangers were to rue their missed chances when Queen of the South took the lead in the 35th minute. In their first meaningful attack of the game, Danny Carmichael swung over an inviting cross from the right that veteran striker Lyle nodded past Cammy Bell from close range.

Rangers returned fired up for the second half and only a terrific save from Clark stopped Miller from equalising. The veteran striker had time and space to bullet a header towards goal as he connected with Richard Foster's cross but Clark produced a sensational point-blank save to deny him.

However, there was nothing the 'keeper could do to stop Wallace firing Rangers level on the hour mark. Vuckic picked out Clark with a cross from the left and the striker expertly chested the ball into the path of the on-rushing Wallace who swept it beyond Clark.

The Queens keeper then kept his side in with a chance as he got down low to block Law's low drive after Vuckic had played him in.

But Vuckic then came to the rescue for Rangers at the other end as he headed Lyle's curling shot off the line late on.
