Faty leaves Sydney to sign with Mariners

Senegalese defender Jacques Faty parted company with Sydney FC with a year still left on his contract to sign for A-League rivals Central Coast Mariners on Monday.

French-born Faty, 32, played 30 A-League games for the Sky Blues after joining during last year's transfer window, but both sides came to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract to enable him to join the Mariners.

The centre-half, who previously played for Rennes and Marseille, signed a new deal this year which would have finished at the end of next season, the club said.

But the Mariners late Monday announced they had signed Faty on a one-year deal.

Faty said he had sought advice from Sydney and former Mariners coach Graham Arnold before making his mind up to sign for the Mariners.

"The first one I spoke to was the coach (Arnold) and he told me a lot of great things about the Mariners. Great lifestyle, great team and I've always personally had a good relationship with the coach (Tony Walmsley)," Faty said.
