Football: Germans insist World Cup base will be ready

Germany's World Cup base in Brazil will be ready on time, German Football Federation president Wolfgang Niersbach said Friday.
Germany are due to be based in Santo Andre, near the capital of the Bahia region, Salvador, but the site is not yet ready.
"The base will be ready, the training pitch is already finished," said Niersbach from Dusseldorf, just over a month before Joachim Loew's team leave for Brazil.
That view was shared by Germany manager Oliver Bierhoff, who has just returned from a 30-hour visit to the South American country.
"The first time I visited the grass was brown but now it's green and everything will be even better when we arrive," said the former international striker.
Bierhoff insisted the base would be ready while Niersbach rejected claims the camp would become a white elephant after the tournament.
"We are just going to be the first users," said Niersbach.
Germany are due to travel to Brazil on June 7, a day after their final preparation match against Armenia in Mainz.
Loew is set to name his enlarged preliminary squad for the tournament on Thursday.
