Lokomotiv Moscow edge Ural to claim eighth Russian cup
Lokomotiv Moscow won their eighth Russian Cup on Wednesday after beating Ural Yekaterinburg 1-0 in a tight contest in Samara.
Midfielder Dmitry Barinov set Lokomotiv secured a hard-fought victory in front of 38,000-crowd in a replay of the 2017 final, which Lokomotiv also won.
The capital club dominated the early minutes and in the 19th minute Russian international Fyodor Smolov thought he had opened the scoring only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.
However eight minutes later Barinov scored the winner when he nodded home Manuel Fernandes' corner from close-range.
Ural responded by pinning the Muscovites back but failed to find the net, even following a more serious assault after the break.
Lokomotiv are second in the Russian Premier League with one game remaining but level on points with third-placed Krasnodar. They need to beat Ufa in Moscow on Sunday to finish runners-up and claim a place in next season's Champions League group stage.
Ural meanwhile are destined to finish in the lower half of the table.
Zenit St Petersburg clinched their fifth Russian title earlier this month.
