Football: Celtic look to bounce back against Ross County

Celtic will get the chance to immediately bounce back from their European disappointment and extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership when they take on Ross County on Saturday.

The Hoops will have little time to reflect on their abject performance against Ajax in Amsterdam before making the trip to the Highlands to take on Derek Adams' side in the early kick-off match.

The Glasgow giants have already built up a commanding five point lead at the top of the table but in Europe it is a different story with midfielder Kris Commons admitting his side looked out of their depth at times during a 1-0 defeat away to Dutch champions Ajax in midweek.

Neil Lennon's side have struggled to hit top form in recent weeks and laboured to a 2-1 win over newly-promoted Partick Thistle before grabbing a stoppage time equaliser against Dundee United at home last weekend.

Celtic are still unbeaten in the league but former Scotland international Commons knows his side will need to show a dramatic improvement from the performance in Amsterdam if they are to maintain that record.

Talking about the defeat to Ajax he said: "I think that's one of the first games where we really did lack belief going forward.

"The first half was probably one of the worst we have seen, attacking-wise.

"Sometimes you can half accept it if it's in the SPFL the week after one of these Champions League nights.

"But, for the lads who felt fresh and played Ajax two weeks ago and beat them, we lacked confidence going forward.

"There are not many times we have come to one of these occasions and not performed at a proper level.

"Coming in 0-0 at half-time flattered us, really, because we didn't pass the ball well, we didn't look inventive.

"We had no imagination going forward and we were losing the ball too easily. We looked a little bit out of our depth.

"But, second half, when they did score, we were looking more on top."

The Hoops will be able to welcome back captain Scott Brown, who was suspended for the Champions League clash, against a Ross County side that hasn't managed to complete either of its last two games. Their match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle was called off at half-time due to floodlight failure while last weekend's match away to St Mirren was abandoned in the second half due to a waterlogged pitch.

Elsewhere on Saturday, second place Aberdeen will want to continue their fine run of form against bottom of the table Hearts, who have picked up just one point in their past eight league matches.

Motherwell could jump up to second with a win over Dundee United, Partick Thistle will host St Mirren at Fir Hill and St Johnstone take on Kilmarnock at McDiarmid Park.

Meanwhile Inverness assistant manager Maurice Malpas has urged his side to focus on the task of facing Hibernian on Saturday.

The Easter Road club are currently talking to current Inverness boss Terry Butcher about taking over as Hibs manager following Pat Fenlon's departure.

"The decision is Terry's decision -- we are waiting on that," said Malpas.

"The players can't have any influence in it. We have got a job to do and it's important the players do their job."
