Football: Dutchman Jaliens signs with Jets in A-League

Former Dutch international defender Kew Jaliens has signed with the Newcastle Jets for the next Australian A-League season, the club said on Thursday.

Jaliens, 34, joins the Jets after spending the last three seasons at Poland's Wisla Krakow.

The central defender represented the Netherlands 10 times and spent more than a decade playing with Dutch Eredivisie clubs, Sparta Rotterdam,Willem II and AZ Alkmaar.

"With the number of talented young players coming through at the Jets, it is fantastic for them to have the likes of Michael Bridges, Emile Heskey and now Kew to learn from," Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.

Jaliens was a member of the Dutch squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He competed as an over-age player at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he played in all three group matches at the tournament.
