Wolfsburg thump Freiburg to claim ninth straight German Cup

Wolfsburg scored three second-half goals to beat Freiburg 4-1 in Cologne on Thursday, claiming their ninth-straight Women's German Cup title.

With scores locked at 1-1 at halftime after Freiburg's Janina Minge scored late to cancel out Lisa Karl's early own goal, Wolfsburg turned on the style in the second stanza.

Rebecka Blomqvist turned in a rebound midway through the second half, with Alexandra Popp scoring a third with five remaining before Dominique Janssen converted a penalty to seal victory.

"We are just happy. We played a really good game and ran the ball well," Popp told Germany's ARD network.

"It's a crazy atmosphere in the stadium, that's what makes football."

More than 44,000 fans crammed into Cologne's Rhein Energie Stadium, shattering the previous record of 26,282, made 13 years ago.

Wolfsburg have now won nine German Cup titles in a row and have won ten of the last 11 finals, taking them past Frankfurt, who have claimed nine Cups.

Despite booking a spot in the Champions League final against Barcelona in early June, Wolfsburg came into the match in the unusual position of second place on the league table, four points behind Bayern Munich with two games to play.

Wolfsburg started furiously, catching Freiburg off guard with their intensity to take the lead after just four minutes through an own goal.

Wolfsburg defender Lynn Wilms blasted a pass goalwards which deflected off the leg of Freiburg's Karl and into the net.

Freiburg's Minge hit back shortly after, heading in from a corner to level the scores.

Minge went close to putting Freiburg in the lead with a header early in the second half but Wolfsburg pounced on the counter, Blomqvist knocking in a rebound from Ewa Pajor's shot.

Freiburg, who have never won a German Cup, continued to push but Popp headed the game beyond doubt in the 84th minute. Wolfsburg won a penalty with the clock winding down after a Freiburg handball and Janssen converted from the spot.
