Blades cut down to size as Stoke stun Championship leaders

Sheffield United crashed to a surprise 3-1 defeat against Stoke as Phil Jagielka returned to haunt the Championship leaders on Saturday.

Jagielka made over 300 appearances for United across two spells and is well into the twilight of his career.

But the veteran centre-back reminded the Blades of his enduring class as he scored one and set up another, recording a goal and an assist in the same game for the first time in his career.

The 40-year-old teed up centre-back partner Ben Wilmot to fire Stoke into an early lead.

After the Blades levelled through Rhian Brewster's first goal since January, it was Jagielka who restored Stoke's lead.

The evergreen Jagielka ended a rather longer wait for a goal, notching for the first time since April 2019.

Substitute Liam Delap opened his account for the club in stoppage time as the Potters handed new boss Alex Neil his first home win.

United remained top of the table despite a third game without a win.

Second-placed Norwich lost for the first time in 10 games as Preston won 3-2 at Carrow Road.

Preston, who had only scored four goals all season before this fixture, almost doubled their tally in the space of 90 minutes after going behind to a well-taken early goal from Josh Sargent.

Emil Riis equalised midway through the first half with a powerful header and then put his side ahead early in the second period after a swift break.

Gabriel Sara equalised for Norwich on 76 minutes with another neat finish but Preston had the final say as substitute Troy Parrott's cross took a big deflection off Liam Gibbs to deceive Tim Krul.

Steve Bruce's future as West Bromwich Albion manager is hanging by a thread as their dreadful start to the season continued with 0-0 draw against Luton at The Hawthorns.

Tensions were high heading into a game in which Albion created enough to have won but were again left ruing missed opportunities.

Albion fans called for ex-Newcastle boss Bruce to be sacked, with critical chants also aimed at the club's owner Guochuan Lai.

Nathan Tella's goal sealed Burnley's 1-0 win at Coventry as Vincent Kompany's side moved into fourth place.
