Swiss Euro squad hit by stomach bug

The Swiss women's team cancelled training and a media activities on Monday, two days before facing Sweden at Euro 2022, after an outbreak of gastrointestinal problems in the squad.

"Eight national team players and 11 staff members were isolated from the team between Sunday and Monday morning due to gastrointestinal symptoms," said the Swiss Football Association on its web site.

"The players affected by the symptoms are Eseosa Aigbogun, Svenja Foelmli, Seraina Friedli, Rahel Kiwic, Lara Marti, Sandrine Mauron, Julia Stierli and Riola Xhemaili. The affected players and staff members will remain in isolation until they are symptom-free," said the statement.

Defenders Aigbogun and Kiwic, who scored, started as the Swiss were held to a 2-2 draw by Portugal in their Group C opener on Saturday. Midfielders Marti and Mauron came on as subs. Stierli, Foelmli, Xhemaili and goalkeeper Friedli were unused subs.

Team doctor Martin Schober said the cause "cannot be determined on the basis of the current facts. The symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea are consistent, but so far rather brief."

The team is based in Leeds.

"If everyone is symptom-free tomorrow, we can go to Sheffield as planned. If not, further tests will be necessary."
