Olympiakos win Greek Cup final to complete double

An early goal by Serbian midfielder Lazar Randelovic on Saturday lifted Olympiakos past AEK Athens 1-0 in the twice postponed Greek Cup final as the Piraeus side won a record 18th double.

Randelovic scored in the ninth minute to secure a record 28th domestic cup for Olympiakos, who finished the regular season unbeaten in June and won an unrivalled 45th Super League crown.

The final was played at a neutral venue, Panthessaliko Stadium in the northern city of Volos, without spectators in line with government health protocols brought on by the coronavirus epidemic.

Saturday's contest was marred by violence hours before the match when dozens of AEK supporters tried to approach the hotel hosting the Olympiakos team, only to be turned away by police using tear gas.

AEK suffered a fourth straight defeat in the final, having lost to PAOK Thessaloniki each of the previous three seasons.

Both teams could only use players from the 2019-2020 season as ordered by FIFA as the cup final was to have been played just after the campaign ended.

However the first attempt to play the contest in July was rejected by police authorities for fear of violence at the planned Rizoupoli Stadium in Athens.

The rescheduled August 30 clash at the Athens Olympic Stadium was then postponed due to a third Olympiakos player testing positive for coronavirus, forcing the team into quarantine.
