Former German international Doll named as APOEL boss

Former Germany midfielder Thomas Doll was named as APOEL's new head coach on Thursday in his first job since leaving Hanover at the end of last season.

Cypriot champions APOEL said the 53-year-old had signed a two-year deal until May 2021.

The news came just hours after the Nicosia club sacked Italian coach Paolo Tramezzani following their 2-1 first-leg defeat by Azerbaijan's Qarabag in Nicosia on Tuesday in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Doll's first competitive game in charge will be the return leg in Baku next week.

Former Lazio, Hamburg and Eintracht Frankfurt player Doll made 43 appearances for East Germany from 1986-1990 and played 18 matches for Germany after reunification.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund boss left Hanover after their relegation from the Bundesliga in May.
