Portsmouth held their nerve to win the Checkatrade Trophy final on penalties against fellow third-tier outfit Sunderland in front of a tournament record crowd of 85,021 at Wembley on Sunday.

The south coast side won 5-4 on spot-kicks after a thrilling 2-2 draw between two of English football's fallen old guard, who not that long ago were Premier League teams but are both currently gunning for promotion from League One after falling on hard times.

As such, the final of a much-maligned competition, which is open to teams from Leagues One and Two as well as academy squads from the Premier League and Championship, was a welcome chance for the two clubs' long-suffering fans to enjoy a big day out at Wembley.

Over 40,000 supporters from each team made the trip to London, and the huge crowd was treated to a dramatic contest.

Sunderland, in the top flight as recently as 2017, went ahead through Aiden McGeady's free-kick in the first half.

Nathan Thompson levelled for Portsmouth with a header eight minutes from the end of normal time.

In the closing stages of extra-time, Jamal Lowe's stunning lob put Portsmouth in front, only for McGeady to slot in a last-gasp equaliser.

In the shoot-out, Lee Cattermole saw Sunderland's second penalty saved by Craig MacGillivray and Oliver Hawkins scored the winning spot-kick.
