Former Germany international Marcell Jansen was on Saturday voted president of fallen Bundesliga giants Hamburg, who currently sit top of the second division in Germany.

The 33-year-old was elected by club members with nearly twice as many votes as his nearest rival to become the senior figure at Hamburg, who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season for the first time in the club's history.

"This election is from the heart," he told members in his acceptance speech.

Jansen played for Hamburg as a left-back and midfielder from 2008 until 2015 but retired, aged just 29, when the club opted not to extend his contract after an injury-hit season in 2014-15.

"To end my career at 29 was a statement for the club - there was never a question of me kissing another badge on a different shirt," he said Saturday.

Jansen made 45 appearances for Germany, including a substitute appearance in the Euro 2008 final when the Germans lost 1-0 to Spain in Vienna, and was part of the squad which finished third at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He has been a member of Hamburg's advisory board for over a year.
