Struggling Gijon part ways with coach Abelardo

Struggling La Liga side Sporting Gijon on Tuesday parted company with coach Abelardo Fernandez following a string of disappointing results.

"It was decided by mutual consent that Abelardo Fernandez will no longer coach the first team," a club statement read.

"This decision follows the sporting situation in which the club currently finds itself."

Gijon are in the relegation zone in La Liga having lost 12 of their 18 games this season.

Former Barcelona and Spanish international defender Abelardo -- a gold medal winner in the 1992 Olympics -- took over in February 2014, guiding the club into the top flight the following year.

Gijon just survived in La Liga last season, with Abelardo's contract due to run until summer 2018.
