Mexican Aquirre appointed at Al-Wahda

The Mexican Javier Aguirre has been named as the new coach of Al-Wahda, the club from the United Arab Emirates announced on Thursday.

Aguirre has signed a one-year deal to replace the former Saudi Arabia striker Sami Al-Jaber, whose contract was not renewed.

The 56-year-old Aguirre was sacked in February from his previous position as coach of Japan due to his involvement in a match-fixing scandal from his time working in Spain with Real Zaragoza.

He coached Mexico at the 2002 World Cup and again at the 2010 tournament but has spent most of the last decade working in Spain, including spells at Osasuna -- who he took to fourth place in La Liga in 2006 -- Atletico Madrid and Espanyol.
