A wonder goal by New Zealander Jeremy Brockie eliminated title-holders Orlando Pirates from the South African FA Cup this weekend.

The 27-year-old striker struck 13 minutes from time to earn SuperSport United a 1-0 victory from a last-16 tie in northern city Polokwane.

Kaizer Chiefs, who were succeeded as cup holders by Pirates, also went out after a shock 2-1 home defeat against second-tier Black Leopards.

Brockie, a recent arrival at Pretoria-based SuperSport from Canadian outfit Toronto FC, will be a candidate for goal of the season in South Africa after his match-winner.

Using the instep of his right boot, he volleyed a David Mathebula pass across goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo and the ball curled into the net via the far post.

The goal earned Brockie the man-of-the-match awards -- a $420 (385 euro) cheque and a green jacket similar to those worn by US Masters golf champions.

"All my team-mates should be accepting this award with me," said the Christchurch-born footballer with the permanent smile.

"The ball did not fall nicely for me during the first half, but I hit the sweet spot for the goal," he said.

SuperSport have already lifted the South African League Cup this season and victory over Pirates places them among the favourites to win the richer, more prestigious FA Cup as well.

Pirates, who took an unbeaten 13-match all-competitions record into the cup match at Peter Mokaba Stadium, lacked final-third punch and seldom threatened goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Gordon Igesund, who joined SuperSport last year after a disappointing spell as South Africa coach, said a switch to a 3-5-2 system proved crucial.

"Having no right-back was a gamble, but five in midfield gave us the edge there and using two strikers prevented Pirates building attacks from their half," he explained.

Chiefs paid dearly for fielding a virtual reserve side as Leopards triumphed 2-1 at Soccer City stadium in Soweto through a stoppage-time Roggert Nyundu goal.

Leopards led at half-time after Morgan Shivambu scored a goal that should have been disallowed for offside and Zimbabwean Willard Katsande equalised.

Another Zimbabwean, Khama Billiat, and Hlompho Kekana scored late goals to earn Mamelodi Sundowns a 3-1 away win over Platinum Stars in north-west mining town Rustenburg.

Sundowns took the lead when Mzikayise Mashaba finished off a 19-pass movement and Eleazar Rodgers levelled just before half-time.
